About the College of Sciences
As one of the largest colleges at UNO, the College of Sciences (COS) offers diverse paths of study spanning the scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry, computer science. earth and environmental sciences, mathematics, physics, and psychology. Its seven departments and four research institutes partner with industry and government to conduct cutting edge research, expand the frontiers of knowledge, and fuel scientific and business growth. Students work side-by-side with distinguished faculty; through small class sizes and a student-centered approach to learning, we foster an enriching and supportive academic community. With occupations in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines estimated to grow 1.7 times faster than non-STEM fields, graduates of COS are trained in both academic scholarship and real-world skills to be the scientific leaders of tomorrow.
OPPORTUNITIES
Twenty student organizations offer ample opportunity for students to get involved, develop leadership skills, and attend professional and networking events. We know that learning does not just take place in the classroom and experiential learning is highly encouraged through the College of Sciences Undergraduate Research Program (COSURP), AMRI Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program, and classes that provide course credit for participation in research projects. Many faculty also offer paid and volunteer research positions to work alongside them and graduate students in their laboratories or in the field. Students are able to apply their skills in real-world applications through internships such as the GE Software Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SWEAP). Opportunities are also available to earn course credits for interning with local companies and organizations.
