About the Institute
The New Faculty Research Institute (NFRI) was created in the 2017-2018 academic year by the UNO Office of Research in collaboration with Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI). The yearlong Institute is comprised of eight monthly working lunches and interactive workshops, connecting new faculty members with colleagues across disciplines and with administrators eager to support them in their research, scholarship, and instruction.
This faculty development program is open to all new faculty members during their first year. "New" faculty members might be:
- New to UNO: You have been hired for a tenure-track faculty position based on your expertise in your discipline, your profession, or your industry experience.
- New to your faculty role: You have documented success in research, teaching, or scholarly activity and have moved from a non-tenure-track position to a full-time, tenure-track faculty position.
The goals of the NFRI are to create a positive working environment within a research-supporting culture that is interdisciplinary.
Design of the New Faculty Research Institute
-
The New Faculty Research Institute is a valuable opportunity to create a community of interdisciplinary faculty members. You will have the opportunity to share your expertise, learn from your peers, and interact with academic and research administrators.
Lunches provide opportunities for strategic networking and partnership development. Sessions showcase resources and tools that you can use right away to prepare for success in your new role.
-
Sessions explore what it means to be successful in your role as a new faculty member. With your peers, you will identify areas where you're already succeeding and areas where improvement is possible.
Faculty development is integral to organizational health, expertise, and research success. The New Faculty Research Institute will help you experience the big picture starting in your first year at UNO.
-
In the fall semester, faculty register for grant writing workshops held by the Office of Research in the spring semester. The grant writing workshops follow the entire process of a proposal submission:
Funding
Outline Proposal; Planning Services
- Develop outlines for proposals to ensure the writing aligns with agency guidelines prior to working on a full narrative
Review and Edit Proposal Narrative
- Editing services for grant proposals: formatting, copy editing, revising for clarity/persuasion, aligning narrative with program guidelines
Startup Funds for New Faculty
The New Faculty Startup Program is administered by the Office of Research and provides supplemental funding for faculty startup costs. This program’s objectives are to make UNO competitive in hiring the highest quality faculty who have the greatest research potential and to support research targets in the campus strategic plan.
Your first year of startup will be funded upon your employment with the requirements that you will 1) submit at least one external grant proposal through the Office of Research in both your first and second years of employment and 2) attend New Faculty Research Institute meetings.
These programs are meant to provide faculty with a structured framework to become successful in a research-supporting culture.
