A major economic anchor in New Orleans is its biomedical corridor, a 2.4 square-mile area downtown which is home to a cluster of companies specializing in bioscience research and health industry innovation. Known as the BioDistrict, the area also includes a site where two major, state-of-the-art health care facilities are under construction. University Medical Center, a state-run teaching hospital, and a new United States Veterans Affairs Medical Center are scheduled to be operational in the near future. According to the University Medical Center website, this collaborative medical complex is expected to generate an annual $1.26 billion economic impact and create more than 19,700 permanent jobs in the New Orleans area.

The UNO College of Education and Human Development offers a Bachelor of Science in Human Performance and Health Promotion (HPHP). This program prepares students for professions that enhance individual and community wellness and promote health and physical activity. Earning an HPHP degree provides the skills to make a difference in the health and wellness of individuals or communities.

The Human Performance and Health Promotion program offers concentrations in Health Promotion and Exercise Physiology. In the Exercise Physiology concentration, students gain advanced knowledge about how the body responds to exercise and how these concepts can be applied to help individuals reach their physical potential for both health outcomes and athletic performance. Students learn to use physical activity as a tool in health, fitness and sports settings. The Health Promotion concentration prepares students to develop, implement and evaluate the delivery of health programs with an emphasis on promoting wellness and preventing illness. Students learn multiple strategies that can be applied in a variety of health care settings.
