Mizell-Nelson, a UNO faculty member since 2004, was a lifelong New Orleanian and a foremost authority on two quintessential New Orleans topics: the po-boy and the streetcar. He served as the public history coordinator for the UNO history department.

University of New Orleans President Peter J. Fos announced that John W. Nicklow has been selected as the University's new provost and vice president for academic affairs. Nicklow has served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill. The hire must be approved by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. Nicklow is expected to begin his duties at UNO during the late spring of 2015.

University of New Orleans English professor Niyi Osundare will receive the 2014 Nigerian National Order of Merit Award, the nation's top prize in science, medicine, engineering/technology and the humanities. Osundare is a poet, dramatist and essayist and one of Nigeria's preeminent public intellectuals. He has authored 18 books of poetry, two books of selected poems, four plays, a book of essays, and numerous articles on literature, language, culture and society. An investiture ceremony will be held in his honor, along with the Annual Forum of the Nigerian National Order of Merit Laureates, in Abuja, Nigeria on Dec. 2-3.

An ancient species of starfish has been named after University of New Orleans paleontologist Kraig Derstler. Derstler, an associate professor of earth and environmental sciences and an expert in invertebrate fossils, has spent decades digging up the past. Now his name will live long into the future through Swataria derstleri, an early starfish that is approximately 450 million years old--older than dinosaurs, the Gulf of Mexico or even the Atlantic Ocean.

Researchers at UNO will work in cooperation with researchers at Purdue University on the project. The goal of the research is to understand the strategy and detailed steps of a cyber-attack, collect evidence for possible legal proceedings and reveal hidden impacts of an attack to minimize loss and to prevent against similar attacks.

Ninety-seven percent of the buildings in the historic Tremé neighborhood are rated either good or fair, according to a comprehensive mapping and analysis project completed by the University of New Orleans Department of Planning and Urban Studies. Out of 670 total buildings rated in the survey, 525 were deemed to be in good condition, while 124 were rated fair and 21 (3 percent) were rated poor.

Walsh, the director of the Creative Writing Workshop at UNO, had his first novel accepted for publication in July 2013 by Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam. Einhorn (the editor of bestsellers like The Help and The Widow of the South) acquired the world rights for Walsh's book in a pre-empt deal as soon as she read it, not allowing the book to ever go to auction.

Teenagers and twenty-somethings around the world will curl up on couches tonight, eyes transfixed, to watch Star-Crossed, a new CW network science-fiction drama set in Louisiana. The show, which has already wrapped filming for a second season, was partially filmed and produced at the University of New Orleans' acclaimed Nims Center Studios, located on the University's Harahan campus. Star-Crossed airs locally at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17 on WNOL.

Today, Governor Bobby Jindal joined higher education leaders, including University of New Orleans President Peter J. Fos, to announce a funding increase of $141.5 million for higher education institutions for the next fiscal year. The funding hike represents a 6.66 percent increase over the budget for the current fiscal year.
