Department of
Curriculum and Instruction

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction prepares students for teaching and related careers at the baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate levels; provides master's and doctoral degrees in a broad variety of curricular areas; partners with and improves schools in the Greater New Orleans area; and generates and disseminates applied, basic, and sponsored research concerning teaching and learning. The Department is unique in the New Orleans area because it provides the full range of initial and advanced programs related to the preparation of teachers and related personnel, and the faculty have been committed to conducting research in contemporary curricular practices and innovations.

The department's programs are informed by the interaction of theory and practice, and they are designed to develop an understanding of the major roles of teachers in culturally diverse, urban educational settings. Courses of study, partnerships with various agencies, and funded projects provide students with access to the most recent innovations in educational research, assessment, and technology.

To find out more about the programs of study, including advanced studies (M.Ed., Ph.D., and Add-On certification), please use the menu under the heading "Programs of Study."

Note:

There is also a "Master of Arts in Teaching" (M.A.T.) degree, which is an initial teacher certification degree; therefore, it is not included under "Advanced Degrees."

If you already have a Bachelor's degree and wish to become certified as a teacher, then the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T) degree would be your goal.
