Students in a PLUS classroomBachelor of Science in Urban Studies and Planning: The Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies and Planning degree is an interdisciplinary program that provides students with a holistic approach to the study of the urban environment. Students are exposed to the historical, cultural, social, economic and environmental aspects of urban areas.

Areas of concentration: nonprofit leadership, environmental studies, hazard policy studies, historic preservation, transportation studies, geographic information systems (GIS), public culture, urban design, geography, and housing.  Other concentrations may be selected by students with permission from an academic advisor.  Read more >>

Graduate Programs

Two students standing and talking with their bicyclesMaster of Science in Urban Studies (MSUS): The Master of Science in Urban Studies (MSUS) engages students in the interdisciplinary study of cities and the process of urbanization. Subfields in anthropology, geography, as well as urban planning and historic preservation allows students the opportunity to design a unique program of study that incorporates the insights of the three departments and other UNO resources. MSUS graduates enter applied fields in urban planning, public administration, government agencies, private corporations and non-profits. The program also prepares students to pursue specialized research leading to a doctoral degree. Read more >>

Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP):Student in a PLUS classroomThe 45-credit hour program offers specializations in the areas of Environmental and Hazard Mitigation Planning, Historic Preservation, Housing and Community Economic Development, Land Use and Urban Design, and Transportation Planning. These specializations provide students the opportunity for more targeted training in their chosen area of interest. The Department also offers a certificate program in Historic Preservation and a certificate program in Hazard Planning. Opportunities exist for students to earn a Graduate Certificate in Hazard Policy Studies offered through the UNO Department of Political Science and a certificate in GIS through the Department of Geography.

Students in a PLUS classroomPh.D. Program in Urban Studies: The Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Studies degree enables students of exceptional ability to undertake advanced study and original research in the fields of Urban Affairs, Urban History, Urban Planning and Urban Anthropology. The program's mission is to prepare students for careers in scholarly activity, applied research, and policy analysis. The Ph.D. in Urban Studies program provides graduates with a solid foundation from which to develop policy and conduct applied research outside of academic settings and for teaching and research in colleges and universities.
