Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies and Planning: The Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies and Planning degree is an interdisciplinary
program that provides students with a holistic approach to the study of the urban
environment. Students are exposed to the historical, cultural, social, economic and
environmental aspects of urban areas.
Master of Science in Urban Studies (MSUS): The Master of Science in Urban Studies (MSUS) engages students in the interdisciplinary
study of cities and the process of urbanization. Subfields in anthropology, geography,
as well as urban planning and historic preservation allows students the opportunity
to design a unique program of study that incorporates the insights of the three departments
and other UNO resources. MSUS graduates enter applied fields in urban planning, public
administration, government agencies, private corporations and non-profits. The program
also prepares students to pursue specialized research leading to a doctoral degree.
The 45-credit hour program offers specializations in the areas of Environmental and
Hazard Mitigation Planning, Historic Preservation, Housing and Community Economic
Development, Land Use and Urban Design, and Transportation Planning. These specializations
provide students the opportunity for more targeted training in their chosen area of
interest. The Department also offers a certificate program in Historic Preservation
and a certificate program in Hazard Planning. Opportunities exist for students to
earn a Graduate Certificate in Hazard Policy Studies offered through the UNO Department
of Political Science and a certificate in GIS through the Department of Geography.
Ph.D. Program in Urban Studies: The Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Studies degree enables students of exceptional
ability to undertake advanced study and original research in the fields of Urban Affairs,
Urban History, Urban Planning and Urban Anthropology. The program's mission is to
prepare students for careers in scholarly activity, applied research, and policy analysis.
The Ph.D. in Urban Studies program provides graduates with a solid foundation from
which to develop policy and conduct applied research outside of academic settings
and for teaching and research in colleges and universities.
