What is First Year Advising?

All incoming freshman will be assigned a First Year Academic Advisor who will assist in making academic decisions, as well as, serve as a resource for any related questions pertaining to The University of New Orleans. All freshmen (less than 30 earned hours) will work closely with a First Year Advisor until the student transitions to their major college. The objective of this close, working relationship is to assist students in building a solid academic foundation during their freshmen year.

Privateer Enrollment Center (PEC)

The Privateer Enrollment Center is located on the first floor of the Earl K. Long Library and houses all components of the Office of Enrollment Services, including First Year Advising (FYA).

The Role of the Academic Advisor at the University of New Orleans

The relationship between advisor and advisee is one of shared responsibility. Though students are ultimately responsible for the choices they make in college, the University realizes that in order to make informed decisions, students need the mentoring and advice of academic advisors and others in the University community. Your assigned academic advisor is your primary resource regarding academic issues, opportunities, and programs. Additionally, advisors help students facing academic difficulties and help them to recognize possible causes of their difficulties. Suggestions for alternative courses of action and referrals to other campus resources will be made when necessary. Academic advisors assist students during the course selection and registration process and also encourage first-year students to become involved in campus organizations.

Advisor Responsibilities

  • To clarify university policies, regulations, programs, and procedures
  • To assist first year students transitioning to college.
  • To be available to meet with students each semester.
  • To keep regular office hours and be adequately prepared to meet with students.
  • To offer advice on selecting courses and to assist students in developing an academic plan that satisfies degree requirements.
  • To be a responsive listener and to refer students to appropriate support services within the university when needed.
  • To discuss academic performance and the implications of the students’ performance related to progressing in degree attainment.
  • To help students explore interests, abilities, and goals and to discuss their interests, abilities, and goals might relate to academic majors.
