Common Read 2017

The First-Year Writing Program and First Year Experience have developed a Common Reading Program as a way to encourage first-year students, staff, and faculty to engage in a shared academic experience.

UNO's FWP prepares students to succeed in their academic coursework, communicate more effectively, and engage successfully with an increasingly text-heavy world. We teach writing as a process of inquiry: writing is not only a way to express what we already know, but a way to learn.

First-Year Writing Program

We offer a two-semester sequence of courses, ENGL 1157 and ENGL 1158. Clearly defined outcomes and our Writing as Inquiry Identity guide our instruction. Our pedagogy fosters the development of cognitive strategies, called "habits of mind," that are essential to success in college.

Students who complete our program are not only better writers but also better students.
