Engineering Safety Officer/Engineering Technician

50% of time as Engineering Safety Officer, 25% of time as Engineering Technician, 25% of time as Engineering Building Coordinator. Reports to assistant dean of engineering


: Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following: Ensure the workplace environment of the Engineering Building including the engineering auditorium, patio and breezeway areas, student classrooms, offices, storage areas, elevators, stairwells, and laboratories are compliant with the UNO campus safety codes and other subsequent safety regulations as required by the UNO Safety Office. Inspect, collect data, and identify potential hazards in the engineering workplaces and ensure that appropriate safety regulations are in place. Act as the safety inspection coordinator and risk manager for the engineering building, its facilities, and its associated workplace areas. Act as the Building Coordinator for the Engineering Building identifying areas of needed repair and required maintenance, while supervising approved construction projects, remediation, restoration work, and associated activities. Interact with and provide liaison to UNO Facility Services to manage, maintain, report anomalies, and log work requests while ensuring the requested work is completed. Coordinate with Engineering Deans, Department Chairs, Technicians, and Administrative Assistants to identify those items that are suspect to the safety and well-being of the College of Engineering employees and its students and officially report those items to UNO Facility Services and the UNO Safety Office. Provide local point-of-contact services for those third-party vendors and maintenance crews needing building access for roof-mounted cellular antennas, telecommunications closets, power closets, and other maintenance areas. Coordinate the opening and closing of the engineering facilities as needed for special events. Provide faculty and students with general support for the setup and execution of certain experiments and the use of specialized equipment to ensure the safe operation of labs and assembly areas. General technician duties including assisting in the repair, maintenance, assembly, and purchasing of lab and office equipment. Assist in other tasks as directed by Engineering Deans and Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering.


Bachelor's Degree in Health & Safety, Engineering or other science related area OR Associates Degree in a related field with three years experience with safety certifications OR six years experience in a safety related field with safety certifications. Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to lift 50 lbs.


Advanced Degree. Two years of professional work experience in an academic setting. Some experience setting up desktop computers in a networking environment.
