Kenneth Walsh, an associate professor of management, has been selected as the University of New Orleans' first Provost's Fellow for the spring 2016 semester. The program was instituted by John Nicklow, who began his role as UNO provost and vice president for academic affairs on July 1. According to Nicklow, the Provost's Fellow program provides academic leadership experience and skills development to a faculty member with a potential interest in academic administration.

GE Capital in October became stop No. 1 in UNO's new campus-wide job shadowing program organized by the Office of Career Development. Celyn Boykin, the department's director, says it made sense to launch the program at GE Capital, home of the already established Software Engineering Apprenticeship Program with UNO, known as SWEAP. Boykin says that the job shadowing is a formally organized opportunity for underclassmen to get a glimpse of the actual work performed by professionals employed in their field of study, laying the groundwork for relationships with potential employers.

The 147th Golden Key Chapter UNO was originally chartered on April 17, 1990, but until recently the group has been inactive, officials said. Restarting the chapter is part of a new era at UNO.

University of New Orleans President Peter J. Fos and Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Brett Kemker voiced plans this spring to see an Honors College established at UNO.
Following a recent surge in membership to the University's 50-year-old honors program, the program director believes those plans could soon come to fruition.
"We are at the threshold," said Abu Kabir Mostofa Sarwar, director of the University honors program and a professor of geophysics at UNO.

A University of New Orleans doctoral student has received has been named a 2013 Minority Fellow by the National Board of Certified Counselors. She is among the nation's first recipients of this honor, which brings a $20,000 award.
She also is a fellow in the UNO College of Business Administration's new business accelerator program, which helps students develop plans to successfully launch a business. With these two fellowships in hand, Tamia Randolph-Alvarez could soon make waves in the New Orleans counseling community.

The results of a new survey from the University of New Orleans Survey Research Center show New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu continues to enjoy strong support from Orleans Parish residents with a robust 70 percent job approval rating. The New Orleans City Council is also viewed positively, with a 53 percent job approval rating, according to the survey.

More than 50 students participated on Friday in the University of New Orleans first juried undergraduate research competition, a showcase event designed to expose undergraduates to scholarly research competitions and put them on a path to pursuing graduate work and attaining grant funding.
