    UNO Awards Research Grants to 20 Undergraduate Students

    Twenty University of New Orleans undergraduate students have been awarded grants to conduct research in their fields of study under a faculty mentor. More than 120 students applied for the sought-after Privateer Undergraduate Research and Scholarly UNO Experience awards. Organized by the Center for Undergraduate Research/Office of Research, the program aims to introduce all UNO undergraduate students to research opportunities and to provide a mechanism for students to find faculty research mentors

    John W. Nicklow Is Formally Installed as Seventh Leader of the University of New Orleans

    John W. Nicklow on Wednesday was formally installed as the University of New Orleans' seventh leader before a crowd of roughly 500, including leaders in academia, business and politics. Selected as UNO president in March by the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors, Nicklow has been serving in the role nearly eight months. But, in the tradition of academia, the investiture ceremony held on the lawn facing the stately columns of the University's Earl K. Long Library, marked the official start of a new chapter in UNO's 58-year history. Dan Reneau, interim president of the University of Louisiana System, placed around Nicklow's neck the so-called "presidential chain of office," a medallion bearing the names of all of UNO's seven leaders.

    A Big Welcome: More than 180 UNO Volunteers Lend a Hand During New Student Move-In Day

    They came with mini-fridges, microwaves and suitcases--and also, umbrellas, rain boots and ponchos. Relentless rainfall definitely dampened Move-In Day at the University of New Orleans. But it didn't stop scores of new and transfer students from taking up residence in Pontchartrain Halls, the 740-person state-of-the-art student housing facility on Milneburg Road. More than 180 faculty, staff, alumni and student volunteers helped students over the course of the day. Many greeted the students curb-side, helping them lift heavy loads and ease the otherwise unwieldy task of moving from a rainy parking lot into a four-story residence hall bustling with hundreds of other people, boxes, directions and questions.

    Mr. Ambassador: UNO Distinguished Alumnus Mark Romig

    For the past 40-plus years, Mark Romig has found himself telling the story of New Orleans in ways that make New Orleanians proud. From welcoming VIP visitors to the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition just six years out of college to now overseeing one of the most successful New Orleans marketing campaigns the city has ever seen, Romig has proven he's a home-grown treasure whose heart for the city has inspired him to lay out the welcome mat without trampling on natives' good will. That's why the University of New Orleans International Alumni Association has named Romig (B.S., '78) its 2016 Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumnus. It was at UNO that Romig, now 60, discovered the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration program. It was then a new degree offered through the College of Business Administration--and it would become the perfect career door for Romig, a man who loved to talk, loved to visit and loved to work.

    Mark Romig Named 2016 UNO Homer Hitt Distinguished Alumnus

    The University of New Orleans International Alumni Association announced that Mark C. Romig has been selected as the 2016 University of New Orleans Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumni honoree. The alumni association will present Romig with its highest honor at the Distinguished Alumni Gala, which will be held at the National WWII Museum's United States Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center on Thursday, Nov. 3, from 7-10 p.m. The event will also celebrate the investiture of the University's seventh leader, President John W. Nicklow, who will be formally installed during an on-campus ceremony on Nov. 2.

    Noyes Brings Passion for Student Growth and Strong Instruction to Job as UNO's Associate Provost

    Caroline Noyes, new associate provost for the University of New Orleans, will assist the provost with programs and research that will draw and retain students while keeping faculty engaged and excited about the work they do. In this new role, her focus will be on assessment and institutional effectiveness. Noyes comes to UNO after more than 25 years in the Atlanta area, the last seven at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she most recently led the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning. Before that, she was assistant director in Georgia Tech's Office of Assessment, a position she took after working 12 years at Oglethorpe University, rising from assistant professor of psychology to chair of the division of behavioral sciences.

    'Enrique's Journey' by Sonia Nazario Selected as University of New Orleans' Common Read Book for 2016-17

    The University of New Orleans has selected Enrique's Journey, published in book form in 2006, as its Common Read selection for 2016-17. Celebrated author and journalist Sonia Nazario will speak at UNO's University Center Ballroom on Sept. 20. The free, public event starts at 5:30 p.m. and will include a reception, author presentation, Q&A, and book signing. Common Read was developed as a way to encourage first-year students as well as other UNO students staff and faculty, to engage in a shared experience while sparking meaningful dialogue about topics of wide-reaching concern. It is organized collaboratively as a partnership between the University's first-year writing program and its Office of First-Year Experience.

    At age 70, Carl Wagner has traveled so extensively, it's easier for him to tick off the countries he's not visited than to list the ones he has. Now, the University of New Orleans alum and former director of international education at UNO is giving back, eager to help more UNO students experience the life-changing power of traveling abroad.     University of New Orleans Generated $470 Million Economic Impact for Metro Area in 2014-15

    The University of New Orleans generated a total economic impact of $470.5 million for the metropolitan New Orleans area in the 2014-15 fiscal year, according to an analysis conducted by the University's Division of Business and Economic Research. The impact is comprised of $285.3 million in direct expenditures and $185.2 million in secondary expenditures. The total figure encompasses total spending, total income, total employment, and total state and local tax revenues.

    UNO Dedicates Dr. John Altazan Plaza in Memory of a University Founder's Legend

    Nineteen newly planted fledgling trees dot the south entrance to Kirschman Hall, a reminder of the contributions of a man University of New Orleans administrators, faculty and alumni remember as a legend. John Altazan, founding dean of the UNO College of Business Administration, died in January at 89, leaving a legacy of service to the University that today's university leaders say they strive to uphold. Altazan worked for UNO for five of its nearly six decades. On Monday, UNO administrators, faculty and alumni gathered with Altazan's widow, children and other family to dedicate the new Dr. John Altazan Plaza in his memory.

    John Altazan, founding dean of University of New Orleans' College of Business Administration, died Sunday, Jan. 10, at the age of 89. Altazan had a pioneering influence over the College of Business Administration, leading the first effort to obtain national accreditation and hiring the faculty who would be the program's earliest architects. But Altazan's main legacy, according to those who knew him, will always be the incredible and often life-changing influence he had on students.

    UNO Announces Center for Teaching Innovation

    The University of New Orleans announces the creation of the Center for Teaching Innovation, a faculty resource center that will promote new teaching methods that support the learning styles of the modern college student. The center, which opened this week, is coordinated by Beth Blankenship and is housed on the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building. It will move to its permanent home in the Earl K. Long Library once the fourth floor renovations are completed.

    A team of five graduate students from the Lester E. Kabacoff School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration was named a finalist in a national market study competition.     UNO Grad Students Named Finalists in National Hotel Market Analysis Contest

    A team of five graduate students from the Lester E. Kabacoff School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration were named finalists in a national market study competition. Jolene Gettridge, Tanvi Shah, Brian McCallon, Lisa Rourke and Nicole Schnell created a presentation based on data examining trends and projections in New Orleans' hotel market. Their team was among 30 invited by Smith Travel Research to compete in the competition and one of six chosen as finalists. As a result, the team was asked to present their results during the International Hotel Show in New York in November.

    College of Business Faculty Member Named First Provost's Fellow

    Kenneth Walsh, an associate professor of management, has been selected as the University of New Orleans' first Provost's Fellow for the spring 2016 semester. The program was instituted by John Nicklow, who began his role as UNO provost and vice president for academic affairs on July 1. According to Nicklow, the Provost's Fellow program provides academic leadership experience and skills development to a faculty member with a potential interest in academic administration.

    University of New Orleans' Accreditation Reaffirmed

    University of New Orleans announced that its continuing accreditation has been reaffirmed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The accreditation process occurs on a 10-year cycle with reviews conducted at the middle and end point of the cycle. Its purpose is to ensure that the University is meeting the highest educational standards. UNO will receive its next full review in 2025.

    UNO Alumni Association Announces 2014-15 Excellence in Teaching Awards

    The University of New Orleans International Alumni Association announced that the winners of the 2014-15 Excellence in Teaching Awards are Paul Schilling, professor of mechanical engineering, and Randy Bates, professor of English. Each year up to two awards are bestowed upon faculty members who exhibit excellence in teaching. The winners are chosen by a selection committee that is comprised of past award recipients and a representative of the UNO International Alumni Association. Both Schilling and Bates were recognized for their enthusiasm for teaching, devotion to their students and dedication to facilitating student success. They have consistently received exceptional teaching evaluations from students. Schilling and Bates will each receive a cash award of $2,000.

    Thirty UNO Students Selected to Compete at 2016 Model United Nations Conference in New York

    The University of New Orleans' award-winning Model United Nations Club is headed back to New York City in March for the national organization's annual conference on global issues, and it has selected a diverse delegation for 2016. Thirty students learned Nov. 20 that together they will represent the countries of Australia and New Zealand at the annual event, which last year drew roughly 6,600 student delegates from more than 400 colleges and universities.

    UNO's Graduates Encouraged to Complete The Outcomes Survey

    University of New Orleans students get a lot of surveys. But there's one coming to email inboxes Tuesday, Dec. 1, that could have a tremendous impact on students and the university as a whole. The Outcomes Survey is going out to all UNO students--graduate and undergraduate--who are on track to graduate in December. This five-minute online questionnaire asks about graduates' employment status, salary, career field and more. It will also be sent to the same graduates at three additional intervals: three months after graduation, six months after graduation and a year after graduation.

    The University of New Orleans has been recognized twice this month for its commitment to serving United States veterans. Gov. Bobby Jindal on Nov. 11 recognized the campus as a "Governor's Military and Veteran Friendly Campus" for the 2015-16 school year. In addition, the University was designated a "Military Friendly School" by MilitaryFriendly.com, a division of Victory Media, a service-disabled, veteran-owned business that rates companies and colleges on their programs to recruit and retain veterans and military spouses.

    UNO's New Job Shadow Program Give Students a Glimpse of Their Studies at Work

    GE Capital in October became stop No. 1 in UNO's new campus-wide job shadowing program organized by the Office of Career Development. Celyn Boykin, the department's director, says it made sense to launch the program at GE Capital, home of the already established Software Engineering Apprenticeship Program with UNO, known as SWEAP. Boykin says that the job shadowing is a formally organized opportunity for underclassmen to get a glimpse of the actual work performed by professionals employed in their field of study, laying the groundwork for relationships with potential employers.

    The University of New Orleans' new provost began his career designing and constructing water supply and waste disposal facilities for American Indian communities in Arizona.     New Provost Nicklow Brings Collaborative, Analytical Approach to UNO

    On July 1, Nicklow assumed his new role at UNO as provost and vice president for academic affairs; he held a similar position at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., where he spent 17 years. He previously served as assistant provost for enrollment management. During his tenure at SIU, he led initiatives for new academic programming, both on-campus and online, as well as efforts to improve cultural diversity, service learning in the community and undergraduate research.

More than 10,000 students have participated in the international exchange, which was founded in 1976.

    ScholarWorks@UNO, the University of New Orleans' online institutional repository, reached a major milestone this week as the one millionth item was downloaded from the site. The open access publishing platform archives and shares UNO's scholarship and creative work with researchers and interested readers worldwide. ScholarWorks houses more than 4,000 items representing faculty and student work across all disciplines. It includes dissertations and theses, undergraduate papers, conference proceedings and entries from peer-reviewed journals.

    Representatives from the University of New Orleans and Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Company revealed a new study on the decline of the U.S. community banking industry before a group of more than 20 industry stakeholders today.     Representatives from the University of New Orleans and Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Company revealed a new study on the decline of the U.S. community banking industry before a group of more than 20 industry stakeholders today. The group convened at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center and was joined by U.S. Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, who chairs the Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee.     Nicklow Selected as New UNO Provost

    University of New Orleans President Peter J. Fos announced that John W. Nicklow has been selected as the University's new provost and vice president for academic affairs. Nicklow has served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill. The hire must be approved by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. Nicklow is expected to begin his duties at UNO during the late spring of 2015.

    UNO Expected to Get $1.8 Million through WISE Fund
