New friends said "good-bye, but not for long" this morning at the University of New Orleans, where more than 200 incoming fall freshmen participated this week in New Student Orientation. The two-day program is designed to welcome the new students to campus, ensure proper enrollment and provide both students and parents resources and contacts they may need throughout the academic year.
NSO at UNO is just the beginning of the students' transition to college life, said Associate Director for Orientation and First Year Student Success Christy Heaton. In fall, new students also enjoy a six-week welcome programming season called the Privateer Plunge.

When filmmakers John Richie and Jonathan Jahnke began working with inner-city children of New Orleans in a program for honor-roll students, they faced a shocking discovery. Richie and Jahnke had partnered with the Fountain of Youth Foundation, a leadership program for honor roll students in New Orleans that asked them to contribute their time to an anti-violence program.
"Through that work, we realized that each and every kid that we were encountering had been directly touched by gun violence, whether it was a family member or a friend that had been shot, and oftentimes right in front of them," said Richie.
Five-and-a-half years later, "Shell Shocked: A Documentary about Growing Up in the Murder Capital of America" is making waves in the metropolitan area and beyond.

The University of New Orleans is the recipient of a 3-year, $315,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to help fund the University's annual summer research program for undergraduate students, which is heavily focused on exposing minority students to scientific research. Having defeated torrential downpours and brought crowds to campus last year, the alumni association has decided to step up its game.

The annual Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival was founded in 1986 citizens who shared a common desire to celebrate the region's cultural heritage. Over the last 27 years, the famed festival has grown from an informal two-day event with 500 audience members to a five-day extravaganza filled with entertainment and literary programming.
This year's festival runs Wednesday through Sunday, March 20-24. Events take place in various venues in the city's downtown and French Quarter. Supermodel Heidi Klum, shock jock Howard Stern, comedian Howie Mandel and former Spice Girl Mel B promenaded and posed for crowds and cameras outside the Lakefront Arena. Host Nick Cannon rode a Mardi Gras-style parade float through the Arena parking lot accompanied by the PussyFooters and Victory Belles, scantily dressed all-female marching groups regularly seen strutting in the city's Mardi Gras parades.

The University of New Orleans says good-bye today to Louis V. Paradise, a longtime University faculty member and the university's interim provost. Paradise, a licensed psychologist, is retiring from UNO following 30 years of service. A new provost, James Payne, joins the university Jan. 1.

All alumni are invited to attend the cocktail hour event. The UNO International Alumni Association Annual Meeting and Soiree runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Loa Bar, International House Hotel, located at 221 Camp St., New Orleans. Researchers also have recently released two companion reports showing an increase in cyclists and pedestrians in the greater New Orleans area -- and a corollating increase in bicycling and pedestrian crashes.
