About
Professor Allen's major intellectual and research interests are social theory and social issues, especially issues related to violence, drugs and mental illness. The social construction of alcoholism and the application of classical theories to contemporary problems have been continuing preoccupations. He arrived at the University of New Orleans since 1970, when he was about as young as the average student. He served as chair of sociology from 1981 to 1990 and from 1999 to 2012.
