University Awards
There are many ways in which members of the University of New Orleans community are recognized for their outstanding contributions. Listed below are the annual awards bestowed by the Office of the President, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, and the University of New Orleans International Alumni Association. Please use the appropriate form or means by which to submit nominations.
Office of the President
Cooper R. Mackin Medallion
The Cooper R. Mackin Medallion was established to honor the third Chancellor of the University of New Orleans with the first medallion being presented in 1998. It is awarded to a faculty or staff member who has made outstanding contributions in support of the University's mission. The recipient is an individual who has demonstrated excellent, sustained, and selfless service to the university. All faculty and staff members, both active and retired, are eligible for consideration. Nominees should be individuals whose extraordinary achievements have contributed significantly to the advancement of the University.
A selection committee will review the nominations and recommend the final list, if any, to the President. Only one recipient can be selected in a single year, and it is possible that no one is selected. Please submit nominations no later than September 2, 2024.
Gordon H. "Nick" Mueller International Leadership Medallion
The Gordon H. “Nick” Mueller International Leadership Medallion is presented in recognition of the contributions that were made to the University by Dr. Gordon H. “Nick” Mueller and is awarded to an individual who has provided significant leadership toward the internationalization of the University of New Orleans. The recipient will be an individual who has utilized their academic expertise in a substantial way in enhancing the internationalization of the University of New Orleans. Contributions will be those that are considered significant and innovative. Usually, but not exclusively, the medallion is bestowed upon a University of New Orleans faculty or staff member.
The Medallion may be awarded annually. Dr. Mueller and the President will select the recipient. Please submit nominations no later than September 2, 2024.
Presidential Staff Medallion
The Presidential Staff Medallion is awarded to a staff member who has demonstrated outstanding service to the University community. The recipient should be an individual who has demonstrated selfless dedication to the University, is an active member of the campus community, and is an asset to their department or college. All active staff members with at least 5 years of service are eligible for consideration.
A selection committee which will include representatives from the staff will help select the recipient. The selection committee will review the nominations and recommend the nominee, if any, to the President. Only one recipient can be selected in a single year. Please submit nominations no later than September 2, 2024
President's Award for Advancement in Diversity and Inclusion
The President's Award for Advancement in Diversity and Inclusion recognizes and honors an employee, team or administrative unit that has demonstrated measurable impact and leadership in both (a) improving UNO's profile as an institution that fosters racial equity and a campus environment of belonging for all, and (b) advancing the University's collective core values of diversity, equity and inclusion.
A selection committee appointed by the President will review the nominations and recommend the final list, if any, to the President. Only one recipient (individual or group) can be selected in any given year, and it is possible that no one is selected. Please submit nominations no later than September 2, 2024.

Faculty Excellence in Teaching
PURPOSE: The Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award is a recognition of a full-time faculty member at the University of New Orleans for demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Faculty Excellence in Service
PURPOSE: The Faculty Excellence in Service Award is a recognition of a faculty member who exemplifies outstanding service to the profession, the discipline, the department, the college, the university, and/or the broader community.
Faculty Excellence in Mentoring
PURPOSE: The Faculty Excellence in Mentoring Award is a recognition of a faculty member who exemplifies outstanding mentoring to graduate or undergraduate students and/or to peers.

Office of Research
Early Career Creativity, Research & Scholarship Award
PURPOSE: The Early Career Creativity, Research and Scholarship Award is a recognition for Assistant Professors who have passed their third year review and who have distinguished themselves in their creative or scholarly activities.
TYPES: Two types of Early Career awards may be presented:
- Research Award – based on traditional research productivity, generally assessed by grant and contract funding and/or publication in peer reviewed journals
- Scholarly or Creativity Award – based on scholarly and creative productivity, generally assessed by publication of books, literature, or similar written works or creation of artistic works
DEADLINE: December 9, 2022
Creativity, Research & Scholarship Award
PURPOSE: The Creativity, Research and Scholarship Award is a recognition for persons who have achieved the rank of Associate Professor or Professor and who have distinguished themselves in their creative or scholarly activities.
TYPES: Two types of awards may be presented:
- Research Award – based on traditional research productivity, generally assessed by grant and contract funding and/or publication in peer reviewed journals
- Scholarly or Creativity Award – based on scholarly and creative productivity, generally assessed by publication of books, literature, or similar written works or creation of artistic works
