Joseph Beams, Ph.D., is an Professor of Accounting and holds the Oil and Gas Professorship in Accounting. He earned his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 2003. His primary areas of research expertise are insider trading, stock options, taxation of investments, and executive resignations. Professor Beams has published in quality journals that include Journal of Accountancy, Journal of Business Ethics, Accounting Horizons, The Accounting Educators Journal, The CPA Journal, Accounting and the Public Interest, and Strategic Finance. In 2012, Dr. Beams published an article in the Journal of Accountancy, which is the most widely read accounting publication in the United States. He has taught both financial accounting and managerial accounting for the University of New Orleans Executive MBA program and has also taught financial accounting, managerial accounting, and cost accounting at the undergraduate level and has been the coordinator for all sections of the foundation course in financial accounting since 2005.
He is Chair of the Accounting Web and Technology Committee and serves on a variety of other committees. Dr. Beams was the originator and continues to be the advisor for the newly formed student chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants which continues to grow and benefit UNO accounting majors. He is also co-advisor to Beta Alpha Psi national honorary society.
