The University of New Orleans received a Healthy Business Award from the Jefferson Chamber during the economic development organization's Business Leadership Awards luncheon held Wednesday, May 9 at the Hilton New Orleans Airport Hotel. Launched in January 2018, the University's new Workplace Wellness Program was recognized in the “up and comer” category.
“This is terrific validation of our wellness initiative,” said President John Nicklow. “We are trying to give our employees new pathways to living healthy lives, and I think we are off to a terrific start. One important aspect of a proud and productive team is ensuring that team members and their wellbeing are supported.”
With its new Workplace Wellness Program, the University is promoting a campus-wide, all-around healthy lifestyle for its faculty and staff members to follow. The program offers employees a variety of health and wellness activities, information sessions and hands-on training. Inside the campus Recreation and Fitness Center, a Workplace Wellness Corner has been designated as a place for employees to obtain free exercise information, workout tracking cards, nutrition handouts, healthy recipes and more. Employees can take advantage of heavily discounted membership rates for the Recreation and Fitness Center or use the facility free of charge on the first Wednesday of each month. A "Walk the Louisiana Festivals" challenge lets employees log hours walked for monthly recognition and encouragement. The program also includes Nicklow's twice-weekly cross-campus walking club, seminars on healthy eating, guest speakers, fitness assessments and monthly newsletter.
The Jefferson Chamber is a nonprofit, membership-driven organization advocating for businesses at the local, state and federal levels. The Chamber's Business Leadership Awards honor the accomplishments of both small and large businesses and the impact they have had on the Jefferson Parish business community. Other awards recognizing healthy businesses went to Cox Enterprises for most creative program and Jefferson Parish Government for best employee-led program.
