The spring 2019 Jazz at the Sandbar concert series kicks off this week when drummer Shannon Powell, also known as "The King of Treme,” joins jazz studies students from the University of New Orleans on stage at The Cove Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. The series, established by emeritus faculty member Ellis Marsalis in 1990, pairs seasoned professional musicians with UNO jazz students on the bandstand in a music club environment.
Jazz at the Sandbar is presented each Wednesday night for eight weeks during the fall and spring semesters and features a different respected jazz artist each week. Admission for the University community is free with proper ID. For all other guests, a $10 donation is suggested. The Sandbar is located inside the The Cove building on the western edge of the University of New Orleans campus and offers a convivial atmosphere, food and libations.
The spring 2019 lineup includes vibraphonist Chuck Redd on March 20; percussionist Alexey Marti on March 27; singer Kurt Elling on Apr. 3; singer Sasha Masakowski on Apr. 10; trumpeter Kevin Louis on Apr. 17; organist Lonnie Smith on Apr. 24 and guitarist Peter Bernstein on May 1.
