The University of New Orleans’ fall 2023 Jazz at the Sandbar concert series kicks off on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. with the Derek Douget Quintet. Douget, who is a saxophonist and UNO faculty member, and his quintet will perform the traditional tribute to jazz studies patriarch and Jazz at the Sandbar founder Ellis Marsalis.
The series will be presented each Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for seven weeks, featuring a different respected jazz artist. The fall 2023 series includes a faculty showcase with guitarist Brian Seeger on Oct. 11, artist-in-residence and guitarist Bobby Broom on Nov. 8 and vibraphonist Jason Marsalis closing out the season on Nov. 15.
Jazz at the Sandbar, established in 1990, pairs seasoned professional musicians with UNO jazz students on the bandstand in front of a live audience at the Sandbar, located inside The Cove. These experiential learning opportunities are an integral part of the jazz studies program, bringing to life the ideas and concepts shared in the classroom by the program’s exceptional faculty. Jazz at the Sandbar provides the extended UNO community with the rare opportunity to see and hear world-class artists in an intimate setting, while observing the development of the next generation of jazz presenters and performers.
The performances are free to UNO students and employees. For anyone else, in-person admission is $10. The shows will also be streamed through the School of the Arts Facebook page.
