Dan Harper, a beloved mentor, adviser and teacher at the University of New Orleans for nearly three decades, died on March 11 on his 75th birthday. Harper retired from UNO earlier this year as the associate director of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, having positively influenced numerous students over the course of almost 30 years.
“Dan Harper was UNO at its very best,” said Scott Pentzer, assistant provost for international education and interdisciplinary studies. “He believed in our students and knew they were what made UNO special. Dan loved interdisciplinary studies because it encourages students not only to figure out interesting things in the classroom, but also to figure out who they are and all they have to offer our city and the world. A deeply gifted adviser and teacher, Dan Harper’s memory is an inspiration to everyone who worked with him.”
A native of Springfield, MO, Harper earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in counseling from Southwest Missouri State University. In 1991, he moved to Louisiana to work at LSU-Eunice as an academic counselor, tutoring center director and student affairs professional. In 1996, he joined UNO where he served as a counselor, adviser and administrator in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
Harper was an adviser, mentor and course instructor to hundreds of students in the Bachelor of Arts in General Studies and Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies programs; he was also a University Success instructor. He served as an academic adviser to student-athletes and was an avid supporter of Privateer athletics, donating his time and money to academic causes for student-athletes.
Harper was the UNO coordinator of the National Student Exchange (NSE) program for 26 years, introducing UNO students to the adventure of attending another school for a semester or two. He also welcomed more than 1,000 students from across the United States and Canada to study at UNO and experience New Orleans. Harper received the Exemplary Service to NSE award, as well as other commendations from the governing board. He was a multiple-time winner of UNO’s Employee of the Month and received the President’s Medallion in 2017.
During his tenure at UNO, Harper served on a number of committees including Courses and Curriculum, Adviser’s Council and the Appeal Committee. He was member of the Founder’s Club, Friends of the Library and UNO Federal Credit Union.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Donna Reed Harper, a step-daughter and three step-sons, as well as grandchildren, step-grandchildren and many other relatives. A memorial will be held at a later date.
