More than 45 years ago, in 1976, the University of New Orleans initiated its flagship study abroad program in Innsbruck. Its founder, Dr. Gordon H. “Nick” Mueller, is known as a man who “thinks big,” so even for the first UNO-Innsbruck program he chartered a Pan Am flight to take 166 students to Innsbruck, and launched what was to become one of the largest study abroad programs of its kind in the United States. To hear from some former "UNO-Innsbruckers" watch this video and the one posted on our Program Alumni page.
Successes and challenges have shaped the International Summer School over the past four and a half decades. The program has adjusted to changing times and student needs, but it has managed to maintain its identity and academic integrity.
With over 10,000 alumni, “UNO-Innsbruck” is widely recognized both in New Orleans and Innsbruck. Since its initiation, the program has spawned and cultivated a series of partnerships on various levels. First and foremost, the partnership agreement between the Universities of Innsbruck and New Orleans was signed in 1983.
This partnership quickly became one of the most active transatlantic university relationships, including student programs, publications, conferences, and centers. In 1995, the mayors of the two cities signed a Sister City Agreement, and in the same year a vibrant art exchange was started.
So many lives and careers have been touched by the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School. Is it your turn this summer?

Ryan Bell, Director of Experiential Learning and Study Away
As an experienced university administrator and passionate world traveler, I am thrilled to be a member of UNO’s International Education team and working on the legendary UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School. My professional background is in high impact practices, and I am a believer that studying away from home has the strongest impact of all. I studied abroad, both as an undergraduate and graduate student, in London and Albania. Both of these opportunities changed my life for the better! Through my work with the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School, I aim to ensure that all of our students have incredible experiences abroad that increase their global perspective and improve their lives through broadening their understanding of the world and its people.

Jennifer Torres, Assistant Director
My previous travels have sent me to Asia, and I have spent a summer in the city of Innsbruck for the UNO-Innsbruck 2023 program. I'm very happy to continue helping students participate on the UNO-Innsbruck International Summer School! I love traveling and learning about new cultures, so I hope students will open up to all the possibilities this program offers. I studied abroad with UNO in the summer of 2010 in Japan and graduated with my B.A. in English, Creative Writing and a Minor in Fine Arts. Years later, I returned to UNO as Program Coordinator for the Japan summer program. I was able to give students a chance to experience the same life-changing opportunity I had when I studied abroad. Now, I hold the position of Assistant Director for International Education here at UNO which gives me the opportunity to work with many students with different study abroad goals.

Jajuan Johnson, Student Worker
Greetings! My name is Jajuan Johnson. I’m a marketing student in my senior year. I was fortunate enough to go on the Innsbruck Program in the summer of 2022 as a participant, in which I had an eye-opening time; I started working for the program after and was blessed to go to Innsbruck again in summer 2023 as a student worker which was a nostalgic and amazing time being back in Innsbruck, Austria. I have ample experience with the program. Hopefully, I’m able to go again for the third time and get to experience the lovely city of Innsbruck once more as I pursue my MBA. If you want to know anything about life in Innsbruck for the summer, come into the Innsbruck office or call in and I'll be beyond glad to help anyway I can and share my experience with you.
