University of New Orleans alumna Angelle Bourgeois has been named the 2021 Louisiana Elementary Teacher of the Year. Bourgeois was selected Friday during the 14th Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Awards Gala, which was held virtually this year.
The Louisiana Department of Education annually recognizes and celebrates some of the state’s most exceptional educators through the Teacher and Principal of the Year programs in partnerships with Dream Teachers and the Louisiana Association of Principals.
School systems from across the state submitted nominations to the state-level Teacher and Principal of the Year process.
The programs provide an opportunity to acknowledge teachers and leaders who are making exceptional gains with students, state officials said.
Bourgeois earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2009 and her master’s in early childhood education in 2012. She is an educator in the St. Charles Parish Public Schools District and was promoted recently to assistant principal at Allemands Elementary School in Des Allemands, La.
Prior to her administrative appointment, Bourgeois was a teacher at Norco Elementary School.
“I look forward to continuing to represent and elevate my outstanding alma mater and the educators and students of Louisiana,” Bourgeois said.
