Dr. Roberto Barrios, Faculty Director & Professor of Anthropology

Dr. Roberto E. Barrios is a Guatemalan born anthropologist who has conducted research in Central America and Mexico during the last 25 years. His work has focused on transnational migration, forced displacement, and disaster prevention and recovery. Since 2013, he has worked in close collaboration with the Center for Research and Graduate Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS) in Mexico City and has extensive experience in directing undergraduate and graduate research projects in Latin America. He is currently Professor of Anthropology, Doris Zemurray Stone Chair of Latin American Studies, and the Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of New Orleans.
Sebastián Figueroa, Assistant Professor of Spanish

Sebastián Figueroa is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at the University of New Orleans. He received his Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 2020. He worked on his Masters in Latin American Literature at Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City in 2011, and his Masters in Communication at Universidad Austral de Chile in 2008. He earned his BA in Spanish Language and Communication at Universidad Austral de Chile in 2006. His research and teaching interests include Latin American literature and film, ecocriticism, Marxist theory, film and media theory, and cultural studies.
