Health related DisabilitHies
Some Considerations
- Students affected by health disabilities differ from those with other disabilities because systemic disabilities are often unstable. A few examples are lupus, MS, and Crohn's disease. These may cause a person's health status to vary, often unpredictably; therefore, the need for and type of reasonable accommodations may also change.
Instructional Strategies and Accommodations
- Students with health related disabilities often require instructional strategies similar to those listed for other disabilities. The use of such strategies will depend on how the disability is manifested.
- Common academic accommodations might include breaks during testing or class, extended time for testing, use of technology for note taking or recording lectures, occasional due date extensions on assignments, and some flexibility in course attendance policies.
