Coastal Science/Engineering and Restoration
The Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences (PIES) conducts basic and applied research and leads educational programs related to coastal processes, coastal change, coastal ecosystems, and all coastal environmental issues. PIES focuses on providing the science and education necessary to support current efforts to mitigate coastal change. Faculty and students from Biology, Chemistry, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences work collaboratively on project.
PIES is intimately involved with basic and applied coastal science questions and educational efforts of coastal Louisiana and beyond. Historically PIES has been involved in high profile projects such as the Louisiana Coastal Master Plan, Florida Everglades programs, San Joaquin Delta ecosystem programs, East Coast post-tropical cyclone coastal investigations, and Gulf of Mexico education programs.
